Clean Water and Pipelines
Boiled Water Advisories
The government is trying to get all the Indigenous communities clean drinking water, but it isn't enough. People are dying from the side-effects. The plans to get all boil water advisories resolved by March 31, 2021, has not happened and is behind schedule. There is more research being done as well as new plants being built. However, there are new problems arising.
Trans Mountain Pipeline
The Trans Mountain pipeline is a proposed pipeline that would be built alongside an already existing pipeline route. It would run from Edmonton, Alberta, to Burnaby, B.C. Building the pipeline comes with many risks that some are not willing to take. The pipeline ignores Indigenous rights, which has prompted the Wet'suwet'en First Nations to protest against it. These protests have garnered much attention, but they have also led to two RCMP enforcement operations. The government spent millions of dollars on these operations and used excessive force.
Grassy Narrows
Grassy Narrows is an Indigenous community that was devastated after the English-Waigoon river was poisoned by mercury. Dryden Chemicals Ltd. dumped mercury into a river upstream from the community, which then poisoned the river, infesting the water and animals in it with mercury poisoning. The community of Grassy Narrows' main income source was then taken away, as was their health. Many of the residents obtained mercury poisoning, which has had detrimental health effects on the whole community. The Canadian government has not done anything to help fix the mercury poisoning in the river until recently. The government has committed to funding to help Gassy Narrows, but it's taken over 40 years.
