How Many MMIWG2S Are There
For generations Indigenous women and girls have been murdered and have gone missing at alarmingly high rates. A 2014 report showed that there have been more than 1,200 missing and murdered indigenous women between the years 1980 and 2012. However, this number was disputed by Indigenous women's groups who documented the number of Indigenous women to be more than 4,000. The difference of the numbers is due to the under-reporting of violence against Indigenous women and girls. In addition, the unaffected database and the failure to identify many cases by ethnicity. Furthermore, in 2015, Indigenous women made up one-quarter of all female homicide victims in Canada. This number is extremely concerning considering Indigenous women only make up about 4% of the female population in Canada. This genocide is a very real threat to Indigenous women and girls all over Canada.
The Governments Actions
In 2019 a national inquiry on missing and murdered Indigenous women was released. In the inquiry 2,380 family members, survivors of violence, experts and Knowledge Keepers were interviewed. For the inquiry they shared over two years of cross-country public hearings and evidence gathering about cases of missing and murder Indigenous women. The inquiry delivered 231 individual Calls for Justice directed at governments, institutions, social service providers, industries and all Canadians. The inquiry urged the government to take action on this genocide. 2 years later, the government made a national action plan for the missing and murdered women. The government has identified 30 actions they will take that correlate with the national inquiries 231 calls for justice. The action includes prioritizing equitable funding, oversight for the implementation of the Calls for Justice, data collection, improving policing agencies and proper implementation, and monitoring of Gladue reports. The federal 2020-2021 budget has also designated $2.2 billion for completing the inquiries calls for justice.
